2012-2013 K-12 Program Guide
The 2012 - 2013 K-12 Education Program Guide is available for download!

The Indiana State Museum has some exciting new programs and exhibitions for this school year. Want to learn more? Check out the Educators pages on our website for additional information on programs through spring 2013 in our latest edition of the K-12 Education Program Guide.

All programming and exhibits meet select Indiana Academic Standards. Visit us at indianamuseum.org/education for more information and call 317.232.1637 for assistance in planning your field trip.

What's new for 2012-2013?
Indiana State Museum Education staff have been working hard to create new school workshops to expand our offerings. Students can learn about energy, learn from a native Hoosier artist, experience a paleontological dig or perhaps learn that there wasn't always ice during the Ice Age. Check out our new Educational Workshops topics. As a bonus, all workshops have been expanded from 60 to 90 minutes of instruction time, allowing more opportunities for activity and visits to the museum gallery!

PLEASE NOTE: We have decided to cancel the Pipe Creek Paleontology Experience workshops for August and September due to the water usage ban currently in Marion County. We still plan to do these workshops on April 22 - 24 and May 6 - 8, 2013.

Program HighlightsKyle HarringtonArtist-In-Residence
The Indiana State Museum is proud to announce that Kyle Harrington has been chosen as the 2012 Indiana State Museum Artist-In-Residence. A 2006 Ball State graduate with a BFA in Painting, Harrington was the inaugural recipient of the prestigious Robert D. Beckmann Jr. Emerging Artist Fellowship, first awarded by the Arts Council of Indianapolis in 2008.

Harrington will host school workshops focused on painting for grades 6 through 12 on Sept. 24, 25, 26 and 28 and Oct. 1 through 5, 2012 at the museum. He will also conduct demonstrations on painting in the museum gallery and host evening classes for those 21 and over called Paint, Drink and Be Merry on Sept. 28 and 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Each participant will walk away with their own completed piece of artwork.

What Indiana Means to Me: Fourth Grade Students Essay Contest
The Indiana State House Tour Office in conjunction with the Indiana Center for the Book is hosting an essay competition to commemorate Indiana Statehood Day on Dec. 11, 2012. If your class is interested in learning more about how to be a part of this essay contest, see the Indiana Statehood Day page for more information.

Day of the Dead Altar Exhibition
We are currently accepting applications from artists, schools and other organizations interested in creating an altar, or ofrenda for our Día de los Muertos celebration. An ofrenda honors and welcomes back the soul of a deceased person. An altar may be dedicated to an individual or a group of people who have departed. Items on the altar should celebrate the spirit of the deceased in a way that encourages enjoyable memories.

Are you interested in creating an ofrenda? Contact Joanna Hahn at jhahn@indianamuseum.org for information about the application process or download the application.

Temporary Exhibits

YodaStar Wars®: Where Science Meets Imagination
Imagine a world with humanoid automatons translating languages, landspeeders whizzing down the highway and X-wing starfighters protecting the skies. Could these technologies, limited only to the fantasy worlds of Star Wars®, actually become a reality? Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination explores the Star Wars films, the real science behind them, and the research that may someday lead to real-life versions of the technologies seen in the films. The exhibit also features props and costumes from all six Star Wars films.

This out-of-this-world exhibit opens May 25, 2013, at the Indiana State Museum. Tickets for Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination are $10 per member or $10+museum admission for non-members ($19.50 regular admission, $18.50 seniors, $15 children). Timed-tickets are now available to the general public indianamuseum.org.
