America is 250 years old.  What an incredible milestone!  This is a great time to reflect on our nation’s history, celebrate our communities, and explore the stories and events that have shaped the United States over the past two and a half centuries.  Part of history is looking at the dates and events of the past but also important are the experiences of everyday people who have made up America. Veterans, immigrants, entrepreneurs, educators, farmers, community leaders, and families have all contributed to the rich and varied story of our country.  Celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with us. Browse books about the Revolutionary era, innovation, government, and cultural history, discover something new, and become part of the continuing American story.  Attend library programs, book discussions, and family activities that explore the many voices and experiences that make up the American story.

In September, we will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. Special patriotic activities will be happening on the library floor.  We will have children’s programming focusing on our nation’s anniversary.  For our adult book club, we will be reading 1776 by David McCullough.  As we celebrate our nation’s history, we will host a genealogy series to learn how to trace our own family history.  We will partner with Historic New Carlisle, an organization dedicated to preserving our wonderful town’s past, as we take a walking tour of New Carlisle with Dana Groves, HNC Director. Also, we are underwriting the screening of the movie Sea to Shining Sea at the Historic New Carlisle Museum—a story of Katharine Lee Bates, the writer of America the Beautiful, which may be America’s most beloved song.  We have other great activities in the works to make this September a true celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.  So, keep your eyes peeled for all the wonderful activities that we are planning for our country’s semiquincentennial, and let’s celebrate 250 years with a big bang!
