Wanting to get into a fantasy series can be very intimidating when you don’t know what to expect, trust me I know. The world building can begin to feel like a lot when you jump head first into it. Although mostly every fantasy series needs some world building in order for you to understand the story, there are many books out there that are beginner friendly and easier to follow along.
I had a very slow start to my journey in reading fantasy because I was used to mainly reading contemporary romances and not stories about made-up creatures and magic. Though, over the years, Fantasy has become my favorite genre by far. When starting out, I found it a lot easier to focus on the young adult fantasy, as opposed to the long adult series. I noticed how much easier world building was easy to follow. For example, in The Cruel Prince by Holly Jackson, the story takes place on the island of Faerie just off the coast of our modern day world. This was actually one of the first fantasy books I have ever read and one with a plot that is simple to follow along with.
Other beginner friendy fantasy novels include, but are not limited to, The Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, Caraval by Stephanie Garber and Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross. Once you begin to feel more comfortable diving into the world building a politics of fantasy, reading some of the longer fantasy series, such as A Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas are a lot easier to get into.
