The 20th century has seen the most radical evolution of fashion from one decade to the next. During that time, the world’s greatest designers and big fashion houses blossomed, releasing countless iconic pieces and starting trends that fashion historians and professionals still refer to today. The S-shaped silhouette and hobble skirt of the 1900 – 1910s gave way to the flapper look of the 1920s. Glamorous movie stars popularized the bias cut of the 30s, while the 1940s was a more practical decade with utility clothing worn, necessary for women during World War II. The 1950s were characterized by cinched waists and full dresses and skirts, bringing back a more feminine look. The first revolutionary fashion design of the 60s was the mini-skirt, but futuristic fashions were also popular during this decade. The 70s brought us prairie dresses and later disco fashion. In the 80s, there was big hair, big makeup, and big jewelry, and let’s not forget the power suit, fishnet, and leg warmers. Ending the century with the 90s, we had grunge fashion, the preppy look, and punk.
Join us on October 22 at 6 pm as we admire decades of divine fashion and explore fascinating changes in women’s fashions from the Civil War era through the 1990s with vintage enthusiast and local author Sandra L.
