Summer is a time for sunshine, adventure, and creativity—but that doesn’t mean it all has to happen in front of a screen. If your family is looking for ways to unplug and connect this summer, your public library is here to help! Whether you’re spending the day at home or heading out on a local adventure, here are ten screen-free activities that are fun, free (or nearly so), and powered by your imagination.

1. Visit the Library
This summer, let the library be your screen-free sidekick.  Come play, read, craft, and enjoy the Exploration Garden. The library is also a great place to meet up with friends and make new ones!

2. Go on a Book Picnic
Grab a blanket, pack some snacks, and bring a stack of library books. Whether you’re in your backyard or at the park, a book picnic is a simple way to turn reading time into an adventure.

3. Start a Nature Journal
Borrow a book about birds, bugs, or trees, then head outside with a notebook and pencil. Draw what you see, write down your observations, and start your own backyard field guide.

5. Put on a Puppet Show
Check out books on how to make puppets and create characters from socks, paper bags, or recycled materials. Then put on a show for family and friends!

6. Make a Reading Fort
Build a cozy reading nook with pillows, blankets, and a flashlight. It’s the perfect place to escape into a good book on a rainy day.

7. Learn a New Skill
Want to try origami, magic tricks, or simple science experiments? The library has how-to books that make learning something new easy and exciting.

8. Write a Letter to Your Favorite Book Character
Encourage your child to write a letter to a beloved character. What would they ask? What adventures would they want to go on together?
