Is your October vibe “cozy fall” or “spooky season?” The best, most satisfying ways to complement your vibe and share your mood with others are available at the Library. Make memories with your friends at our programs, craft something you didn’t know you could, and discover the fresh stories you can’t stop talking about.

More importantly, you can find books to match your vibe and enrich your fall at the Library for free. Here are 5 ways books can do this better than other storytelling media:

  1. Turning pages leads to bigger pay-offs. A novel can lead you on a journey with enough time to explore grandeur that would exceed the space of a 2-hour movie, short-form video, podcast, or social media post.
  2. Books are rooted in human connection. They can be an AI-free zone. When you choose books written by authors who openly oppose using AI to write books, you connect with the creative mind of another person. Here is a list of mostly young adult authors who reject using AI, and there are many more.
  3. Get closer to the story. A book can tell you more of a story than a TV show, movie or video game. A first-person narrative shows the inner life of the main character, and a third-person narrative may give glimpses of multiple perspectives at once.
  4. Fill in the gaps with your imagination. Not every aspect of a written story can be described, and if the narrator is unreliable, the story leaves space for you to imagine alternatives. You sculpt characters and places based on how you envision them. You are not locked into what you see on a screen.
  5. Enjoy a longer-lasting, greater impact. An excellent book can also be cathartic and healing, which is why the field of bibliotherapy exists. Pharaoh Ramses II had engraved above the door of his library the phrase: “the house of healing for the soul.”

Whether you’re looking for heart-pounding terrors or swoon-worthy delights this autumn, you already have exactly what you need to find them—your library card!
