No doubt you’ve heard the song which inspired the title of this post. If you have not, ask someone you know with a TikTok account. They probably heard it a hundred times.
The lyrics of the “It’s Corn” song originated from a viral interview with Tariq, a young corn enthusiast, published in August on a YouTube channel called Recess Therapy. A few weeks later, comedy music group The Gregory Brothers remixed the audio into a song and posted it to YouTube and Spotify. According to this article from NPR, The Gregory Brothers have been “songifying,” remixing viral videos into songs, for over ten years, and one notable example of their work is the recent “Chrissy, Wake Up” song based on dialogue from Stranger Things.
This song in praise of corn is especially relevant here in New Carlisle. We are surrounded by cornfields and see the sun rise over a golden sea of corn tassels on our commutes. High school students find their first jobs detasseling corn. We watch the phrase “knee high by July” come to life each summer and get lost in corn mazes. Whether we are shucking and grilling corn on the cob or popping kernels over a fire, this starchy vegetable is a staple for summer and fall gatherings.
