As the weather gets colder and winter approaches, nothing is better than gathering with friends and family, preparing some tasty snacks, grabbing an exciting new game, and sitting down together for an evening (or afternoon) of good old-fashioned competitive merrymaking.
The history of games dates back to ancient times. Games are an integral part of all cultures and are one of the oldest forms of human social interaction. Games capture the ideas and worldviews of their cultures and pass them on to the future generation. Games were common pastimes of the royal and elite groups and were often played in court. Some games, such as Gyan Chauper and The Mansion of Happiness, were used to teach spiritual and ethical lessons. Dice games were popular among many different cultures. Chess and checker-like games have also been found in many historical records. Playing cards were imported from Asia and India and were played as early as the mid-13th century. All that to say, games have been around for thousands of years and continue to be popular today.
