Book clubs have a rich history that spans centuries, evolving from informal gatherings to more organized groups. Discussing literature can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Philosophers in Greece and Rome often gathered to discuss texts, similar to book clubs today. In the 1600s, women formed Bible study groups.  During the Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries, literary salons became popular in Europe, particularly in France. These gatherings often involved intellectual discussions about books, philosophy, and politics. In the 19th century, the rise of the middle class and increased literacy rates led to more organized book clubs. In the U.S., the first known book club, the “Book Club of the Young Ladies’ Literary Society,” was formed in the 1850s. During this time, the growth of the publishing industry made books more accessible, and book clubs began to flourish. With the 20th century came the emergence of television and book review programs, bringing wider attention to literature.  In the 21st century, with the birth of the internet,  book clubs were transformed into online platforms that allowed for virtual meetings and easier connections.

As you can see, book clubs have always been important and popular.  If you haven’t had the pleasure of being a part of a book club, maybe now is a good time to join one.  Here at the library, we have two great book clubs. At the Novels at Night book club, we discuss a different book from various genres and talk about other great books that we are reading to give each other inspiration on new reading material.  Starting this January, we have another great book club to join:  Cook the Book Book Club.  We choose the theme or a specific cookbook. You choose a recipe from that cookbook or theme to prepare and share.  Come to discuss what worked, what didn’t, and sample each other’s dishes!  Plates, utensils, and cups are provided.   So Cook the Book combines a book discussion with an activity we enjoy: eating!  Both book clubs are for adults.

Try one or, even better, both book clubs and enjoy time out to discuss something we all love – BOOKS.  Check out our website or our Monthly Snapshot newsletter to learn the days and times of our book clubs.  Looking forward to seeing you there!  Happy reading.
