This past year at ILF (Indiana Library Federation) Conference, one of the breakout sessions offered was Servicing the Aging Population Impacted by Dementia presented by the Alzheimer’s Association. When I saw that this was one of my options, I really wanted to attend for several reasons. One is that the NCPL has many wonderful programs geared towards seniors and I am always looking for new programming that can be helpful to the patrons who regularly attend and draw new participants. Another reason for my interest is that my mom passed away eight years ago from Alzheimer’s Disease and so educating myself is of personal importance to me. Learning how to help prevent Alzheimer’s is something that I want to know more about as I age so that I can hopefully avoid developing dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder involving the abnormal accumulation of proteins that damages nerve cells, causing a gradual decline in memory, thinking, and daily functioning. As the most common form of dementia, it affects millions, usually appearing after age 65. Early signs and symptoms include: memory loss, repetition, disorientation, difficulty with familiar tasks, misplacing items, language problems, and mood/behavior changes. It progresses to profound cognitive impairment, requiring comprehensive care. Age (increasing over 65 years), genetics (family history of Alzheimer’s) and health/lifestyle choices (Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, smoking, and limited physical activity) are all risk factors. There is currently no cure, but certain medications can help manage symptoms and potentially slow progression. Support, structured environments, and healthy lifestyle choices are crucial for management.
Every Monday morning this April at 10:30 am, we will have the Alzheimer’s Association Educational Series to help teach people about Alzheimer’s Disease. Topics discussed will be:
- The 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s
- Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body
- Building Foundations of Caregiving
- Supporting Independence/Communicating Effectively
No registration is required. Please join us to learn more about this very important topic and to prepare yourself and your loved ones to be empowered and encouraged by this series.
